POTENTIAL FOR ACCIDENT AND INJURY REDUCTION IN ROAD ACCIDENTS

The paper assesses the potential for reductions in road accidents and injuries on the basis of existing measures for which there are proven benefits. The measures include (1) the road environment - geometrical design, road surfaces in relation to weather and visibility, lighting, and changes in land use, road design and traffic management, (2) the vehicle - tyre and brake maintenance, use of seat belts, occupant protection, anti-lock brakes, motorcycle conspicuity, (3) the road user - drinking and driving legislation, speed limits, publicity, law enforcement, education and training. Although the benefits apply to UK traffic situations many are equally applicable to conditions in other countries. /TRRL/
