THE COSTS OF TRAFFIC NOISE ABATEMENT
DEKOSTEN VAN VERKEERSLAWAAIBEPEPERKENDE MAATREGELEN
A comparison is made of the costs of (1) noise screens and dikes (2) sound insulation improvement of houses and (3) keeping a distance between highways and houses as measures for traffic noise abatement. It appears that no one type of measure can be regarded as the cheapest in all circumstances and that, depending on the type of urban structure, screens, insulation, or a combination will be the best choice, especially in existing situations. For new planning an important conclusion is that lowest costs are needed when a first row of specially insulated houses acts as a noise screen for the greater part of the area. /TRRL/
