INFLUENCE OF HANDLING PARAMETERS ON CONTROL STRATEGIES IN DRIVER-VEHICLE SYSTEM
To understand the complex control task, driving a vehicle, and the involved strategies, an instrumented car was driven along a marked circle with constant speed, during which certain vehicle dynamic variables, such as yaw rate, lateral acceleration, driving speed, etc, and the control activity of the driver, steering angle, and angular rate were recorded. The control situation was considered as multi-input/output control task. The recorded data of five test persons and five tyre pressure combinations were analyzed using cross correlation and spectral techniques to estimate the influence of handling parameter (ratio of tyre pressures) on the control strategies and activity of the driver. Based on the results it could be concluded that most of the control activity (steering angle movements) concentrates in the frequency range 0 to 0.4 hz and the peaks in the spectrum occur within 0.1 to 0.3 hz. The high frequency activity (in the range 0.4 to 1.0 hz) increases as the vehicle becomes oversteered; the control task becomes tighter. It has been observed that the drivers seemed to use a strategy of dominantly controlling the heading angle and side slip angle next to steering torque in executing the driving task. In addition, a higher concentration level would be required in driving an oversteered vehicle at speeds V greater than 40 km/h along a circle. /Author/TRRL/
