LIMITS OF FLAME PROPAGATION IN SPARK IGNITION ENGINES - BEHAVIOUR OF FLAMES AND EXHAUST EMISSIONS

By using a specially designed spark ignition engine with a transparent combustion chamber, the high-speed schlieren photographs of flames were successfully taken. Further, the unburned hydrocarbons in the cylinder were measured. From this study, the behaviour of flames and the emissions of unburned hydrocarbons in the vicinity of the limits of flame propagation were made clear. /Author/TRRL/
