MEASUREMENT OF IRRITATING ODOR FROM DIRECT INJECTION DIESEL ENGINE AND ITS REDUCTION METHODS
Eye and nose irritation and white smoke from direct injection diesel engine generated during cold starting and warming up diminish within a short period, but as it is so unpleasant it has been attacked to reduce the irritation. The following subjects are described in this paper: (1) evaluation of irritation intensity. Human sense is necessary to evaluate the irritation intensity, but if the special material which is directly related with irritation can be identified, it is possible to evaluate the irritation intensity by measuring the concentration of that material. According to this reason, the correlation between irritation and aldehydes in exhaust emission was investigated, and aldehydes were partly and acrolein was most closely related with irritation. (2) reduction of irritation. To find out the means of reducing acrolein, its concentration under various engine operating conditions and combustion system specification were measured. As the result, anticipatedly the effective means of reducing acrolein are to increase temperature of combustion chamber, and a few effective means of reducting acrolein concentration were investigated. /Author/TRRL/
