MEASUREMENT OF OIL CONSUMPTION BY USE OF HYDROGEN AS A FUEL

A new measuring method of oil consumption, using hydrogen fueled engine has been developed. The oil consumption was determined by the continuous measurement of CO2 concentration in exhaust gas downstream of the simple oxidizing catalyst. With this method, the value of oil consumption can be obtained rapidly and easily without the large facility. In this paper, the following experimental results are described: (1) experimental apparatus and procedure. (2) the oil consumption measured on a hydrogen fueled engine which is almost equal to that of gasoline engine. (3) continuous records of fluctuations in oil consumption in both steady and transient condition by changing engine running parameters. (4) effects of several operating conditions such as speed, load, water temperature, oil temperature, pinned ring and intake manifold vacuum pressure. /TRRL/
