NOX EMISSION, COMBUSTION STABILITY AND LEAN A/F LIMIT CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CVCC ENGINE, DETERMINED BY PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENTS

Using a 1.5 litre 4-cylinder cvcc engine, it was shown that by analyzing the combustion gas pressure and temperature diagrams the NOx emission corresponded well with the temperature-time area ratio. Next, a comparison of the NOx emission, ISFC combustion variations cycle by cycle was made between the CVCC and the conventional engines. Especially, combustion variations were shown by the variance rate of the IMEP (PMI) and variance rate of the average value of combustion gas temperatures between crank angle TDC and 60 degrees ATDC, and while both show good correspondence, it was possible to show that for lean air-fuel ratios or at low or medium load conditions it is appropriate to employ the variance rate, and by using it, it was also possible to elucidate the lean air-fuel limits of the CVCC and the conventional engines. /TRRL/
