ON SEALING PROBLEMS IN ROTARY EPICYCLOIDAL MACHINES
This paper deals with the mechanical problems referring to the sealing of the rotor in the housing of rotating epicycloidal machines. This theoretical analysis is performed mainly on the wankel type machine, which leaves several problems of sealing open, from the thermodynamic and mechanical points of view. The results confirm the oscillating notion of the apex seal in its slot, as it appears in the experimental tests. The apex seal moves periodically under the action of gases and of inertial forces, with sliding, vibration and impact against the walls; several hypothesis were adopted regarding the action of gases against the sides of the apex seals, and they confirmed the results of oscillating motion, explaining also the influence of the angular speed and of the shapes of the seals. This paper is developed by means of the techniques of computer aided design, with an interactive computing system, both for the automatic design of the profiles, and the analysis of the results. Only the use of these interactive computing techniques has the analysis of the equations, which are affected by a very large number of different parameters, for the study of the behaviour of the sealing apex in various working conditions been made possible. /Author/TRRL/
