CONVERSION FROM WIND VECTOR INTO AERODYNAMIC INPUTS ACTING ON VEHICLE BODY IN SIDE WIND GUSTS

The motion of a vehicle, while running on a windy road, is greatly influenced by aerodynamic disturbance inputs. This report shows the results of the studies about aerodynamic disturbance inputs listed below. The purpose of the studies was to ascertain the influence of vehicle's body shape on vehicle behavior. (a) first, a testing equipment to measure aerodynamic yawing moment and side force to be experienced while vehicle's running was developed. A full-scale vehicle body was mounted thereon. Next, the aerodynamic inputs were measured under various different conditions, at the time when the testing equipment ran in front of the side wind blower. (b) wind vector (speed and direction) was also measured and compared with the inputs actually measured. Then, a method to convert the wind vector into the disturbance inputs was developed. (C) the disturbance inputs in various wind conditions were estimated from the measured wind vector. The disturbance inputs so estimated were compared with the inputs actually measured. Through these studies, the authors came to a conclusion that it was possible to convert the measured wind vector, together with the data of the aerodynamic characteristics of vehicle body, into the aerodynamic disturbance inputs in the side wind guest. /Author/TRRL/
