DEVELOPMENTS IN DIESEL-ENGINED CARS

PROGRES DES VOITURES DE TOURISME A MOTEUR DIESEL

Diesel engined cars have a very special image; their main advantage is inexpensive running, especially now that petrol products have increased in cost so much; disadvantages are: limited accelerations, cost when new, noise, emission smell and to a lesser degree, smoke. Normally the public still consider it sometimes to be a utilitarian vehicle. Economical interest of diesel engine has been proved, to a certain extent. Its potential to satisfy emission control standards that are now under consideration is very good. Exhaust gas smell elimination is being studied. Smoke emission level is now perfectly controlled. Recent studies of the engine and the vehicle itself have produced significant results as concerns noise reduction, both inside and outside as well as reduced vibrations. The customer can now choose any of the normal options. Comfort and driveability have been considerably improved. Driving pleasure is now similar to that of petrol engined cars. In its way, the diesel engined cars are well adapted to modern social and economic conditions. /TRRL/
