EXHAUST EMISSIONS, FUEL ECONOMY AND NOISE OF AUTOMOBILES POWERED BY DIESEL ENGINES

This paper is based on work done within the authors' companies. It examines exhaust emissions and fuel economy of diesel automobiles and compares it with similar data on gasoline engine powered automobiles. Some information on diesel versus gasoline engine powered vehicle noise is also presented and discussed. The work on exhaust emissions was carried out on two diesel automobiles of 3000 to 35000 gvw. One of the vehicles is a commercially available estate car and the other an experimental conversion. The aim was to get both vehicles to satisfy the U.S. primary emission targets (without any deterioration in noise or smoke) with changes on the engines of injection rate and injection timing only. This was achieved by optimising injection rate and choosing an injection timing schedule on engine test bed with the help of data on the relative importance of various operating conditions in the cvs cycle. Only the final cvs cycle emission tests were done on the vehicles to confirm the injection rate and timing plans established for each vehicle on engine test beds. Road fuel economies (mpg) of five diesel automobiles (two commercially available and three experimental conversions) ranging in size from a popular European to an American compact are compared with similar data on the gasoline engine powered versions of the same vehicles. These are all commercially available vehicles. The fuel economy data cover driving on motorways, main roads and country roads in the U.K. and in the London area. Two of the three experimentally converted diesel vehicles are identical or superior in performance to their gasoline engine powered versions. With diesel cars giving identical or better performance the fuel economy advantage varies from 20 to 37% in mixed driving conditions. In the rest of the cases the diesel cars have slightly inferior but acceptable performance and in these instances the fuel energy gain can be up to 50%. /Author/TRRL/
