DYNAMICS OF THE TURNING-CIRCLE MANOEUVRE

The object of this article is to show that, with only an elementary knowledge of physics, it is possible to analyse and describe qualitatively the movement of a ship throughout a turning manoeuvre. The practical usefulness of such an analysis is discussed, and the kinematic characteristics of the three phases into which the turning-circle manoeuvre is usually divided in the literature, and the forces and moments acting on the hull during these phases, are explained with the aid of diagrams.
