DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF SHIP PROPELLERS
Evaluation of design weaknesses in the propellers of large ships is a problem recently solved by a major Japanese shipbuilder with the aid of Zonic Technical Laboratories, Cincinnati, U.S.A. A Zonic 1106-4-T/C hydraulic exciter head was chosen for underwater excitation, and the instrument was mounted in a watertight casing fitted with water detection sensors on the inside. In the Japanese shipyard, a test tank holding 300 tons of water and having a depth of three metres was constructed. A test propeller was submerged in the tank and the exciter head was affixed to it. Waterproof accelerometers were fixed at various points on the blades and the propeller was excited through the range of frequencies occurring in service. Modifications could then be quickly and accurately made to designs which showed any signs of weakness.
