DIRECT PULL--THE SIMPLE ANSWER

MacGregor's new semi-automatic Direct Pull weatherdeck hatch-cover which folds in three sections, offers the advantages of simple operation by a ship's crane or derrick, semi-automatic cleating (with improved water-tightness), no chains, or stowage ramps, and 30% reduction in cost compared with hydraulically-operated systems. This type of hatch-cover, which first went to sea in the Govan-built 25,700-dwt bulk carrier Dona Hortencia II in Sept. 1976, is now in service in a dozen ships. The article describes the cover, and includes information on particular installations in ships built or being built by Govan, the Canadian builders Marine Industries Ltd, and the Norwegian builders Kaldnes A/S.
