THE BRIDGE OF THE MOTOR TANKERS MANDAN AND DAKOTA--A CONTRIBUTION TO FUNCTIONAL DESIGN OF WORK-PLACES

A brief discussion on the increased interest shown in bridge layout and design since 1972, with particular reference to activites in West Germany, is followed by a description of the bridges of the 8,000-dwt tankers Mandan and Dakota, which entered the service of the Hamburg owners, Atlantic-Rhederei F. & W. Joch, in 1976. This bridge design is based on the experience of these owners and their ship-masters. Each of the two ships has a spacious wheelhouse with a "bay window" type frontage which accommodates the combined command/navigation control position. At this main control-position, all control and monitoring equipment is arranged to allow the seated master or watchkeeping officer always to have a complete picture of the ship's position, traffic conditions, and functioning of the machinery, with direct control of the rudder, bow-thruster, and main engine (the machinery is arranged for 16/24-hr unmanned operation). There is also a conventional hand steering-wheel mounted between the main control-position and the large chart-table, the latter being installed in the after part of the wheelhouse together with a radio direction-finder, Decca Navigator, and other equipment. The Author (of Atlantic-Rhederei) describes these and other bridge arrangements in detail, with plan and elevation drawings showing the layout. Order from: BSRA as No. 46,784.
