WAKE-SOURCE THEORY

Twenty-five years ago or so, Tulin recommended that the viscous resistance of ship models be determined by means of wake-survey measurements. Such a method had been imagined by Betz for estimating the drag of wing profiles. The extension of Betz's method to three-dimensional flows required many refinements. The present paper is intended to found the theory on a firm base. Rigorous formulas have been established for deeply submerged bodies and also for surface-ship models. But, in the latter case, wake-survey measurements do not suffice; the energy lost by the wake in generating waves should also be determined. This is not yet possible. Therefore the estimates of the viscous resistance of a surface ship model are liable to a systematic error.
