TRANSPORT-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF GENERAL CARGO SHIPS

Introduction of any one operating parameter as a third dimension in the factor analysis of a transport system offers certain advantages. This approach is explored using a simplified design model to demonstrate how it facilities optimal ship choice. The results of varying operating conditions can be put into wider perspective by the use of isoquants and iso-costs for a range of operating conditions. Such families of curves indicate not only the variation of the optimum solution with operating parameter levels, but also indicate the penalties associated with a departure from the optimal configuration, thus offering a design guide. In general the aquisition of ships somewhat larger than optimum for the basic conditions is a sound policy under fluctuating operating conditions. The cost of under-utilized ship capacity is less than the cost of having too little cargo space to offer.
