A MANOEUVRING DISPLAY UNIT
A manoeuvring display unit designed to overcome some basic difficulties experienced in using sonar-doppler dual-axis logs is now in production. The greatest benefit of the M.D.U. is that it provides an onboard manoeuvring and berthing system independent of shore-side aids. The M.D.U. uses a single bow transducer and a rate-of-turn transducer. By processing the rate of turn and the lateral movement given by the low sonar-doppler in a summation unit, the M.D.U. can give the lateral rates of displacement at any chosen points of the ship. The display then clearly indicates the drift and turn components of the ships velocity. The M.D.U. is a piece of apparatus which, with the addition of a rate gyro can, it is claimed, provide the equivalent of two extra sonar-doppler transducers. Displaying ship manoeuvres completely has been found to be of inestimable value, not only for berthing where no shore-side facility exists, but also for approaching a radar-equipped berth, and making turns in difficult approaches.
