THE COST EFFECTIVENESS OF AUTOMATIC NAVIGATION SYSTEMS
This article is concerned with the cost effectiveness of integrated navigation systems. The author sees a need for automation as a requirement for the development of improved shipboard navigation and control subsystems, together with improved ship to ship or ship to shore communication networks; the development of regulated harbour traffic control systems; and the creation of an overall sea traffic control structure. A brief survey of the present generation of electronic navigation aids is given. Mention of statistics concerning navigation aids and a note on automatic navigation systems is included.
