ITALIAN PILE SYSTEM SUPPORTS SLIDE IN ITS FIRST MAJOR U.S. APPLICATION
A reticulated system of slender reinforced concrete piles now being installed beside a California highway is expected to stabilize an embankment well known for failure during heavy rainstorms. The system can be built while a slide is in motion, thereby strengthening the embankment as soon as the pile concrete sets. The system has been widely used in Europe but with little application in the United States. The system consists of a network of cast-in-place concrete piles, each reinforced with a single steel rod. The structure is held together at the top with a thick concrete capping beam cast before the piles are drilled. Corrugated plastic sleeves are inserted in the capping beam to keep open the spaces for the piles while the beam is being cast.
