NEW SYSTEM MAY AID CAR EMISSIONS, FUEL ECONOMY MEASUREMENT
A new system is being developed that will simulate actual automobile operations in controlled laboratory test and permit more realistic measurements of vehicle exhaust emissions and fuel economy. The system will incorporate a small tire testing machine that simulates the frictional properties of road surfaces. The simplified system will have driving tires operating on a flat simulated roadway surface and at the correct inflation pressure. A conventional chassis dynamometer will be adapted to incorporate two flat-bed Simulated Roadway Units, instead of the typical tire-cradling rollers. Fuel economy will be calculated from exhaust emission measurement by hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.
