SAFETY STANDARD MAY EVOLVE FROM PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT STUDY
An accident research program designed to help reduce the high toll of pedestrian injury and death on the highways is described. The results of the study will be used as an aid in developing safety standards to protect pedestrians when they are struck by motor vehicles. Investigators will use an accident investigation vehicle for computerized, scientific reconstruction of accidents at the scene. It is the world's first mobile fully computerized automated system for determining precisely the behavior of vehicles before, during and after collisions. A new method, borrowed from police techniques, to enhance markings left on a vehicle by a struck pedestrain is being developed. The technique involves the use of silver nitrate to bring out pedestrain contact marks on a vehicle, with the aid of photographic highlighting techniques.
