AUTOMATIC UNLOCKING DEVICES FOR SAFETY BELTS
AUTOMATISCHE LOESEVORRICHTUNGEN FUER SICHERHETISGURTEN
A number of mechanical devices for automatic or simplified unlocking of safety belts under development in Switzerland or already available in other foreign countries are described: (1) knives or (2) belt-severing devices which are permanently fixed to the belt, (3) automatic unlocking mechanisms (lass-automat in Holland and pac-automat in Switzerland) in which, after application of a tensile force of 60 or 80 kp respectively, a timing mechanism is activated, and the belts are unlocked after a fixed time delay, (4) finally two emergency unlocking systems are described in which pressure on a button or lever unlocks both belts simultaneously. Belt cutting devices appear to have some inherent disadvantages, whereas automatic unlocking devices promise enhanced safety to users if consideration is given to certain basic principles (repeated functioning in multiple collisions, adaptation to the belt geometry and choice of the correct delay time to unlocking of the belt). /TRRL/
