COMPLETE PROTECTION OF STEEL AND CONCRETE BRIDGES (PARTICULARLY UNDER ASPHALTIC CARRIAGEWAY SURFACING)

KOMPLETTER SCHUTZ VON STAHL- UND BETONBRUECKEN (BESONDERS UNTER ASPHALTFAHRBAHNKECKEN)

The possibilities of protecting steel and concrete under asphaltic surfaces by means of various plastic materials are discussed. This concerns particularly the shock effect arising from the introduction of asphaltic material at temperatures up to 250 deg C and the resulting stresses. Test results are presented dealing with the strength reductions in epoxides, polyurethanes and acrylic materials following one hour and several hour heating. A discussion follows on the impairment of some properties resulting from improvements in others. Thus, it appears that tar-plastic combinations under gussasphalt are less suitable. On steel and concrete bridges epoxy protective layers are predominantly used. The trend in development shows however that soon other synthetic resins will assume greater significance. /TRRL/
