COMPULSORY SEAT BELT USE AND MECHANISMS OF INJURY
DAS SURTENOBLIGATORIUM UND VERLETZUNGSMECHANISMEN
In connection with the law introduced on the 1St January 1976 making the wearing of seat belts obligatory, the federal justice of police department set up an interdisciplinary research group to investigate all accidents in Switzerland in which car occupants wearing seat belts were severely injured. The following problems were to be studied: (1) accident characteristics which also cause a hazard to belt wearers; (2) typical injury patterns of belted occupants, split into collision types; (3) effects of incorrect fitting of seat belts; (4) defects of commercial safety belt systems in normal use. Data for the study consisted of police accident reports with accident photographs and photogrammetric surveys, the groups own investigations of the vehicles, medical reports and technical examination of the seat belts. The first results of the investigation are described for the period January to mid April 1976, and also the development of the degree of belt usage, severity of injuries according to collision types, localisation of injuries, and medically based exceptions from the obligation to wear belts. /TRRL/
