CORROSION TESTING AND MONITORING FOR HIGHWAY STEEL BRIDGEWORK
Experiments were carried out to compare the corrosion of a weathering steel, cor-ten B, and a special mild steel containing copper, under conditions of open exposure, sheltered and partly sheltered exposure. Details are given of four sites chosen for their different atmospheric conditions. Corrosion-time curves are given for the samples at each site and their significance discussed. It was found that open exposure corrosion rates do not necessarily give a true representation of these under a highway bridge. In sheltered conditions, in the absence of chlorides, corrosion rates for cor-ten B were lower than open exposure rates. However under sheltered marine conditions, its corrosion rates were high and severe pitting developed. The appearance of the rusted steel depended more on the method of exposure than its composition. It is suggested that corrosion should be monitored if an unpainted steel such as cor-ten B is used in bridge construction. /TRRL/
