DEFORMATION OF ROAD PAVEMENTS: CORRELATION BETWEEN ELASTIC THEORY AND MEASURED BEHAVIOUR OF ROLLED-ASPHALT ROAD-BASES
This report gives the results of an investigation designed to assess whether a partial application of a structural method of pavement design predicts the deformation behaviour of fully flexible pavements with rolled asphalt road-bases more accurately than a conventional approach. An empirical correlation is derived between the rate of deformation of asphalt pavements and computed elastic stresses, strains and displacements. It is shown that this correlation is statistically more significant than a similar correlation derived from the same deformation data but relating deformation rate to layer thicknesses and subgrade strength. The stress/strain regression is used to derive deformation rates of some current designs: the results imply that, for fully flexible asphalt pavements designed for traffic intensities greater than about 8 million cumulative standard axles, the deformation rates will be significantly higher than originally expected.
