ELASTIC ANALYSIS OF CONCRETE BRIDGES AND THE ULTIMATE LIMIT STATE

A code of practice for bridges (b116) is shortly to be published, which is written in terms of limit state design. For concrete bridges, this code allows the results of an elastic analysis, based upon uncracked concrete stiffnesses, to be used in designing a bridge at the ultimate limit state. During the period when the code was circulated for comment in draft form, the validity of such a design procedure was questioned by a number of designers. It is the purpose of this paper to attempt to explain why the procedure is satisfactory. The basic reason for this is that the elastic solution everywhere satisfies the equilibrium equation and thus gives a statically admissible stress field, which is a requirement for a safe lower bound design in terms of limit analysis. In addition, elastic solutions are readily obtainable for most bridge structures and will ensure that ductility and serviceability problems do not generally arise. /Author/TRRL/
