MEAN NOISE LEVELS ON ROADS WITH FREE FLOWING TRAFFIC

DER MITTELUNGSPEGEL DES LAERMES AN STRASSEN MIT FREI FLIESSENDEM VERKEHR

Several noise level measurements were carried out on motorways and trunk roads with average speeds of passenger cars above 80 km/h and goods vehicles of 80 km/h, and in city centre streets with average speeds of 50 km/h. All the results were converted to a standard distance of 7.5 M from the centre of the vehicle. To obtain formulae connecting noise levels with speeds the measured values were averaged and fitted to mean logarithmic curves. The expressions for mean passing noise levels of passenger cars in relation to the type of road surface (concrete, gussasphalt or fine asphalt concrete) are given in equations. All the results show that there are no especially loud or silent types of passenger car. In contrast goods vehicles exhibit a clear correlation between noise emission and vehicle performance. To take account of this, goods vehicles were classified as "heavy" or "light" according to the number of axles. The resulting noise level - speed relations are given in equations and figures. Information concerning measured noise levels of a mixed passenger and goods vehicle stream and the propagation of traffic noise provide further interesting results. The averaging of right-left measurements shows that the theoretical model corresponds well with reality. /TRRL/
