POLICE EFFECTS ON ACCIDENT RISKS AT T-JUNCTIONS
This paper discusses the effects of the traffic police on gap acceptance behaviour at 5-junctions, and uses a simulation model of vehicle conflicts to evaluate these effects in terms of risk. It is shown that the police can have direct effects on risk by making the turning driver more cautious (either by overt police presence or by the use of warning signs) and indirect effects by making the perceptual task of the turning driver easier (by reducing the speed and the distribution of speeds of approaching major road vehicles). /Author/TRRL/
