STOPPING 'UNDER-RUN' BY ENERGY ABSORPTION
A brief description is given of a hydraulic energy absorber for trucks designed to minimise damage to car, car occupants, and truck in the event of a collision. The unit consists of a sturdy frame pivotted at the top edge with hydraulic cylinders forming the third side of the triangle featuring progressively tapered grooves in their bores. Fitted in place of a normal bumper the absorber has the added advantage that a sensor may be attached to aid backing into loading bays. Crash experiments using the bumper have been carried out at TRRL and it is claimed that using the energy absorbing type of bumper belted car occupants can survive an impact of 30 mph or more and the bumper and truck are undamaged. /TRRL/
