This book is divided into seven parts: 1. The socio-technological problems of noise; 2. The effects of noise on health; 3. Surface transportation noise; 4. Aircraft noise; 5. Occupational, domestic, and leisure noise; 6. The political economy of noise; and 7. Conclusions. These appendices deal with 1. Measures and indices of noise and annoyance; 2. Technological forecasting for noise control; and 3. Environmental impact statements for noise. Chapters 6-11 inclusive of part 3 are devoted to traffic noise, covering the sources and trends of vehicle noise, the technology of vehicle noise reduction, the characteristics and impact of and the exposure to traffic noise, and noise emission standards. /TRRL/
