CONSTRUCTION REDESIGN--WOODSTOCK ROCKSLIDE, N.H.
Following a large rockslope failure along a section of Interstate highway under construction, a two-phase redesign was undertaken to alleviate natural and construction-related instability in the rockmass prior to the continuation of construction operations. The results, as this case history points out, indicate the importance of detailed, preliminary geotechnical investigations. The redesign activities described include the field assessment of the stability of the rockmass without the benefit of much sophisticated testing, the collection of structural geologic information pertinent to the design and excavation of rockslopes under conditions of minimal logistic support, and the reinforcement of the rockmass using a simplified method for rockbolting on open rockcut slopes.
