PERMEABILITY OF FLY ASH STABILIZED SOILS

Two soils, an organic clay and a sand were stabilized with the fly ash. Twenty percent fly ash increased modified compaction density by .10 g/cc in the clay and .32 g/cc in the sand. Unconfined compressive strengths with 20% fly ash increased by 15.5 kg/sq cm in clay and 51 kg/sq cm in sand when compacted immediately and cured 7 days. As the percent of fly ash increases, the permeability of soil-fly ash mixtures decreases. For 100% fly ash samples, cracks developed in the samples creating secondary permeability of 1.2 x .001 cm/sec. Cracks in 100% fly ash samples were due to a reaction in the self hardening fly ash. Permeability decreased with time within the first seven days. Effluent from the tests had a high pH, alkalinity, and dissolved solids concentrations.
