The shaft systems of Diesel-generator sets are subject to several types of vibration, and here the Author, of Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz, confines his article to uncoupled torsional and bending vibrations. The principles of these phenomena are explained, and it is shown how various measures can influence the vibration behaviour. The generator shaft should be as stiff as practicable, and this will necessitate vibration predictions at an early stage of development. The article, which includes information on calculation methods in use at KHD, is presented under the main headings: 1. Introduction. 2. Natural Frequency, Resonance Speed, and Critical Speed. 3. Excitation Mechanism of Torsional and Bending Vibrations. For other recent studies on shaft vibration at KHD, see Abstract No. 40,000. (Sept. 1977). Order from: BSRA as No. 46,923.
