ICEBREAKING OPERATIONS IN THE NORTHERN BALTIC--A SIMULATION STUDY

An icebreaking situation in the Northern Baltic is considered. Two icebreakers are deployed to assist freight ships to and from three harbours in Northern Sweden. This may be considered a rather complex queueing situation. A number of different operating policies for icebreaker assistance are examined by means of simulation. A basic simulation model of winter navigation in the Gulf of Bothnia has been written in SIMULA, which comprises 800-1000 statements, depending on the model version. Ships are assumed to have only one destination, since they are concerned with specialised cargoes such as limestone or iron ore, bound for or coming from particular industrial plants. Among the policy alternatives investigated are different convoy sizes. Some fairly clear policy recommendations are obtained.
