AUSTRALIAN-BUILT RO-RO SHIPS WITH GAS TURBINE PROPULSION
The 14,550 tdw RO/RO vessel "Union Rotorua" has a length oa of 188.14 m, a beam of 26.07 m, a draft of 7.92 m and is powered by a Thomassen G.E. MS5262RB regenerative cycle heavy duty gas turbine developing 27,800 hp giving a speed of 20 knots. The location of the gas turbine on the upper deck was a relatively late decision but resulted in a significant gain in cargo space below decks of 12%, compared with earlier proposals based on twin medium speed diesel engines.
