LATERAL VIBRATION OF PROPELLER SHAFTING AND BOSSING
Taking the effect of oil-film stiffness into account, the lateral vibration of the propeller shafting and after hull steelwork was analysed by means of NASTRAN in a single-screw container ship built by I.H.I. This analysis served to clarify the combined effect of propeller shafting and bossing and the natural frequencies calculated to be in fairly good agreement with the measured values on the actual ship. On the basis of these results, the Authors has established a simplified formula for estimating the fundamental frequency of line shafting and bossing combined. The formula is accurate enough for practical use and the results obtained are within 5% of those due to F.E.M. The paper also presents an approximate formula for estimating bossing stiffness, which is considered to have considerable influence on the lateral vibration of line shafting in single and twin screw ships.
