A BRIEF REVIEW OF THE MONITORING OF VIBRATION IN ROTATING MACHINES

Vibration measurements forms the basis of the condition-monitoring now used in most large rotating-machinery installations. Unless the plant manufacturer has specified the measurements to be made and the analysis criteria, the user has to choose the monitoring equipment himself from the large selection available, and to decide how to use it. To assist in this choice, the Author summarises the characteristics of various types of monitoring equipment and their appropriate conditions of use under the main headings of Sensors and Monitors. The former include piezo-electric accelerometers; velocity transducers with an electrical output proportional to vibration velocity; and contactless displacement transducers indicating relative displacement, e.g. between a shaft and its bearings. Under the heading Monitoring, the measurand, operational monitoring, and vibration analysis are reviewed. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,022.
