MOORING OF SHIPS: A COMPARISON OF SYNTHETIC AND WIRE ROPES

The Author states that the primary purpose of a ship's mooring equipment is to hold the vessel fast at the quayside under all eventualities. With this in mind he looks at the three different types of mooring rope available. Synthetic ropes are known for their high tensile qualities, but suffer two serious drawbacks in that there is an acute danger of the whiplash effect should the rope snap, and the elasticity of the rope tends to allow a surging movement of the ship about the quay. A mixed synthetic fibre and wire rope is also considered undesirable because of the different tensile properties of the two materials. Wire ropes are considered the best in spite of their awkward handling because they retain their taughtness under load. Tables showing details of wire rope properties for different ship sizes are given, and a graph of typical dynamic loading of a rope is also shown. Photographs show different types of rope in use.
