BEHAVIOR OF ORTHOTROPIC PLATES
In most marine structures, the basic structural element consists of a plate reinforced with stiffeners. This plate-stiffener combination can be modeled by an equivalent orthotropic plate and its behavior is described by two nonlinear partial differential equations of equilibrium and compatibility. This paper presents a theoretical solution of these equations for a plate subjected to biaxial edge compression, uniform edge shear and uniform pressure normal to the plane of the plate. The numerical solution is restricted to plates with relatively large aspect ratios. Design and behavior curves for some specific cases are presented in nondimensional form.
