IHI SHIP VIBRATION MEASURING AND ANALYZING SYSTEM AND ITS APPLICATION RESULTS

Since 1969, the measurement of ship vibrations has been conducted on 42 ships at IHI by using a digital data acquisition and processing system; the results of the measurements have been stored in a digital computer and effectively utilized to prevent or remedy ship vibrations. In 1976, the system was renewed by incorporating some additional items necessary for data processing, thus completing the onboard automatic data processing routine. The system, packaged for the convenience of transportation, is always adjusted to be ready for field measurements. Described in this report are an outline of the new system and some examples of its application results. One of the examples showing the minimized vibrations of a container carrier demonstrates that the optimum propeller fitting angle to minimize vibrations can be determined aboard the ship immediately after the vibration measurement, and the other such example shows that the difference between the maximum and average amplitudes of ship vibrations measured in one wave form may differ depending on the fluctuation of ship vibrations by ocean wave.
