STUDIES ON DEFORMATION AND CRACKING IN ONE-SIDED WELDING

The automatic one-sided welding method is now universally employed at shipbuilding yards to rationalize large size plate joining processes. Since this method was first employed, however, it has been widely known that cracks ofter occur near the end of welded joints. Through the studies on cracking, it has been found that the end cracking is a solidification crack, a sort of hot crack. Studies have been made on a solidification crack with regard to the relationship between the high temperature ductility curve of metal and the strain or displacement curve generated on welded metal during the solidifying process; it is a widely held view that cracking occurs when these curves cross each other. The authors analyzed, first of all, deformation of a plate during one-sided automatic welding by applying a free edge boundary correction made by the use of the finite element method to the analytical solution for stress distribution due to the moving line heat source in an infinite plate. As the second step, to examine propriety of the displacement calculation based on this analysis method, the displacement behavior obtained by the one-sided automatic welding experiment was compared with that obtained by calculation. As the third step, the transverse strain value at the middle cross-section of the welded bead in the vicinity of the plate end was estimated from the displacement of the plate under welding on the basis of the thermal elastoplastic increment theory in a uni-axial stress state. Finally, the length and position of end cracking were estimated by using both the above calculation result and the high temperature ductility curve obtained by a Trans-Varestraint test. As a result of comparisons, the shape and position of end cracking estimated by these analyses showed a fairly good agreement with the actual end cracking obtained through the experiment of one-sided automatic welding.
