IHC SLIDING BOTTOM VALVES
The majority of trailing suction hopper dredgers designed and built by IHC Holland are equipped with spoil-discharge arrangements which require a substantial depth of water for their operation, because of the projection of the bottom doors beneath the keel. A number of door valve systems have been developed in an attempt to overcome this problem. The IHC sliding bottom valve system, developed some years ago, is considered to overcome all the drawbacks. The system consists of a number of longitudinally sliding valves which are linked together and actuated by a common mechanism. Two of these valves can be incorporated in a hopper vessel. Among the advantages of the system are that no parts project beneath the keel and there are no actuating components on the main deck which can therefore to kept clear for winches, spare parts, or a crane.
