ELECTROSLAG WELDING OF LARGE CASTINGS FOR SHIP CONSTRUCTION

The use of multiple-electrode consumable-guide electroslag welding will be extended in the very near future to the production of items such as stern frame parts for ships, castings for press frames, engine frames, heavy rudderstock plates, etc. , all of which require large castings. At the same time, investigations will be carried out on the extent to which multiple-electrode consumable-guide welding may contribute to the more economical manufacturing of other large castings, forgings or combinations of materials. Relatively low investment requirements and the flexibility of equipment allowing for changing the number of electrodes used and even allowing its use for submerged arc welding applications make the process attractive for single or small series welding jobs of varying size.
