ERROR CORRECTION IN THE HIGH FREQUENCY MARITIME RADIO-TELEGRAPH SERVICE

While Morse code has been the traditional method of ship-to-shore communication for over half a century, the large increase in traffic resulting from the efficient management of modern ships, combined with the current shortage and high cost of skilled operators, has resulted in the increasing use of direct printing telegraphy. In future, satellite systems will doubtless carry some of this traffic but hf will continue to be the main communication medium for some years. This paper outlines the demands of a hf ship-to-shore telegraph system and describes a solution to the problem posed.
