FLOATING ON GREASE - LOAD MOVEMENT THE EASY WAY

Floatpods are steel housings faced with a layer of elastomer on the undersides. By using an appropriate number of these units (the largest of which is 750mm in diameter) loads of thousands of tonnes can be supported, moved and precisely located. They are available in three standard sizes with nominal load capacities of 25, 75 and 150 tonnes. The floatpad (Fig 1) is an externally pressurised bearing system which uses grease as the working fluid. Pumping requirements are extremely simple and cheap, garage type air driven positive dispalcement pumps being sufficient, operable from either air ring main or air bottle. Its principal characteristics are a high load capacity with ulta-low friction; the ability to operate on a variety of surfaces with a complete absence of stiction; a low power requirement and a comparatively low cost.
