NEW MARINE INFORMATION SERVICE
A United Kingdom Marine Information and Advisory Service (MIAS) has been set up in the Natural Environment Research Councils; Institute of Oceanographic Sciences (IOS) to help any organization or private individual concerned with the marine environment. Existing and potential users of the service which is financed by the Departments of Industry and Energy include government organizations, universities and industry engaged in scientific research, fisheries, offshore operations, shipbuilding, port operations, marine survey and consultancy, coastal protection, pollution control, marine resources or communications. MIAS provides the service previously offered by its predecessor, the British Oceanographic Data Service (BODS), but now with access to the full range of scientific expertise of IOS and its comprehensive library facilities at Wormley Surrey. The most significant development within MIAS is the design and implementation of a storage and retrieval system for marine data. Ultimately MIAS will accept responsibility for advising on what marine data is available within the Uk and internationally. Its first goal is the establishment of a data handling system for waves and currents to which will be added within the present year hydrographic station data and sea level information. For the longer term, the Natural Environment Research Council is investigating the feasibility of developing a comparable system to cover marine geological and geophysical data.
