NEW BARGE-CARRIER DESIGN FROM BACAT
Bacat Systems, of Rudkobing, Denmark, have released details of their proposed Mk. 2 system, in which a 5,400-dwt barge carrier known as the FV501-1 would be used. (The 2,600-dwt Bacat 1 recently left Rotterdam for the Persian Gulf). The FV501-1 is intended for a full load of LASH barges but alternative versions would be available for part loads of containers. Six barges float, locked in position, between the catamaran hulls. A further ten barges are carried on the weather deck; these are hosited aboard by a submersible hoist, turned through 90 deg. on a turntable, and winched forward to their athwartship stowage positions, the final barge remaining on the turntable. Up to 408 TEUs could be carried on deck in the alternative versions. Propulsion is by a 4,000-bhp medium-speed engine, in each of the two hulls, driving a c.p. propeller; a 500-hp bow thruster is fitted. Models of this proposed ship have been tested at the Danish Ship Research Laboratory. The first ship could be operational by mid-1979, and it is expected that classification would be to DNV 1A1, EO, N, Barge Transporter, Ice C. The article includes deck plans of the FV501-1, and also of Bacat's FV501-2 and FV701-1 designs. The two latter, of 8,500 dwt and 13,000 dwt respectively, are improvements on the earlier designs and feature bottom plating (not fitted in the FV501-1) and a stern that can be closed by a watertight door to form a "dock". The FV501-2 would carry (like the FV501-1) six LASH barges between the hulls and ten on deck, and the FV701-1 eight between the hulls and 20 on deck in two tiers. The power and speed stated on the plans are, for all three designs, 2 X 4,000-bhp and 14.5 knots. Order from: BSRA as No. 47,076.
