PRELIMINARY SHIP DESIGN WITH INTERACTIVE GRAPHICAL AIDS

The Authors, of Delft University of Technology, discuss a method which they are developing for the use of interactive computer graphics as a guide for the preliminary ship-design process. The graphical screen, with its basic equipment of keyboard and light-pen, improves commuication between the designer and the computer, and the designer will be able to introduce important subdivision alterations or change input values and then investigate the result with the design model picture on the screen. This picture will consist of equal level contours of the constraints, and will be modified by changing the input data or altering the subdivision; comparisons can thus be made between the modified picture and a preceeding one. This process should aid the designer's judgement and help him to undertake improved decisions in the next iteration step. The Authors are still working on the method, which, when fully developed, will represent an interactive design optimisation. The article describes, with the aid of a numerical example, the present stage of development, and discusses the main lines for future work. See also MRIS Abstract 168250.
